Thanksgiving Week 25Nov21-30Nov21

Well we have a lot to be thankful for but I'll shorten the list here to being able to hang with Matt & Alexa for Thanksgiving. We dined a lot, drank a little, gamed twice (they brought a fun new game gift for us called Splendor!), streamed comics and tunes a smidge, and otherwise solved world problems. We even ventured to Mtn Lion for green chili sauce Friday morning. Very thankful time.

Kala and I stayed in Summit despite, or perhaps as a result of, the 60° days. We enjoyed the walks, the weekend's football games, some good movies (Passing, Mad Women's Ball, others) and did some housework.
Kala and I also hit Outer Range to spend the Golden Ticket. What a blast with beers, Bird Cafe, and a cool sunset. We even capped the night with Trivia (the oldest team by far) as team KaDa.

Pre-TGiving Runs With Sheldon 24Nov21

I was fortunate to catch some Thanksgiving eve runs with Dave Sheldon today. We chose Keystone for all the reasons early season. We arrived at 8:30am at the lift and the lines were not bad but we still took singles and got separated. We had a great time grabbing vert, including a massive opening of Spring Dancer, heh heh. It snowed all morning on us a was a bit colder than expected without the sun. Field trial of the Native DropZone goggles was very successful ~  they fit my narrow head; they didn't fog up in likely conditions; the green lighter lens was perfect for a snowy day; and the big edge-to-edge rounded lens yielded a great field of view. I rode with several families from Missouri, Georgia and Florida, all of which bought Epic Pass Local for everyone just for the Thanksgiving trip - Vail sure does their price elasticity of demand testing well. Skiing with Dave was a great time but ultimately became a dodge-ski as the few open runs became pretty crowded. I bailed about noon and headed to the new Steep spot and enjoyed a beer and pizza. As I passed the lift tix office I observed a 1/4 mile long line across the bridge back into the village to retrieve/buy tickets - sheesh! Noted at Steep was that the taps included many alt Summit brews as Steep's smallish brewing site (they just expanded) couldn't keep pace with demand generated in the new spot; good for them. Pizza is acceptable but bready.

Rod & Ride In Pueblo And Ute & Trinity With Yoho 17Nov21 & 19Nov21

Jim and I took an afternoon roll around Ute and the Rise continues to climb as needed. It was a nice afternoon and plenty of folks were out on the trails. We took the extension toward and back from the frontage road so scored plenty of pedal hits; I even scored another bar blast but didn't go down. Ute is cool and we did a nice ~7.5 miler but it's far from flowy in most spots. We capped with some brews at Trinity. Neither of us had been there in years so it was pretty fun, but Jim didn't have his wallet.

Today I went to Pueblo to try the PT. It was a nice 70° again and the flows were stable at 73cfs but the turbidity is still there. I arrived at 9:15am and did get my new Nature Center annual membership, just $25 for a senior, so that's 5 outings and I likely do more than 10. The guides beat me to the farm and the weir above it so I dropped into weir #3 above NC parking and did some damage - but not as big today as prior or elsewhere. I did finally get to move to the nice weir above the farm and hooked a nice brown TWICE but did not close... grrr. There was a decent late am BWO hatch and then grey midge activity if you are scoring. The rod bend is just a hookup of a big boy before breakoff.
After lunch I hit the Pueblo Lk SP trails for a 13 miler with the Rise on Profile 2. It's not a trail demanding that profile but I just hadn't tried it yet. I spent almost the entire ride in eco (lowest) mode so who knows really but none of the trail was an issue and I flew it at over 10mph on average. So yeah - it works - the Rise is a hoot and it's getting me back out there. I did have a major pedal strike on a rock I did not see right at the end. It stopped me dead and threw me off the bike but for just a bruised palm. Phew.

Another Nice CoWW Outing On The PT 15Nov21

Jim, Andy, Greg and I stole south and east to the PT again today. A Greg sighting on the Front Range is rare and awesome. Flows were reduced by half to just 69cfs today - which kindof dampened fishing as the big ones were seeking new lies. On top of that, the river is still stained and the CO Fish & Game were out shocking to take inventory. Nonetheless, much was done with tiny dries catching mostly tiny fish. I stayed the course nymphing (with RS2, Jimi's Ax and Blood Midge) and did manage some larger fish including this nicer 18"er during a modest fall BWO hatch. Weather remains spectacular. The RFT5 with Evo LTX was a blast. Another fun outing with fishing buddies but we did depart early with the modest performance.

GR8 Day On The PT And Fishing Was Decent 10Nov21

Jim, Andy and I hit the Pueblo tailwater of the Ark today on somewhat of a recon effort. We arrived about 9:30am and while it was windy, it was warmish ~60°+. We did the Nature Center in the AM and moved up to the Valco Ponds SP area for afternoon. Morning was decent with many fish caught on all manner of bugs. For me the silver surfer, blax ice and blood midge fooled the most cutbows but the team was tossing the kitchen sink and it all seemed to work. The flows were good at ~125cfs but the water is still stained green and full of fallen leaves which we often snagged. I caught a number of 15"-18" fish and Yoho caught a nice one farming the bank area above the 3rd, and biggest, weir. Andy hooked many but landed fewer. We had a blast and closed with a nice dinner at Cerberus.

Today was the first field trial for the RFT5. Simply put: "it's spectacular." It was light in the hand all day as hoped, and it was smooth and dreamy to cast with accuracy. The mated Ross Evo LTX was gorgeous, with a great drag system to slow even my biggest fish and retrieved quickly and smoothly. The RFT5 system is a blast and will surely be my go to 5 weight.

Long Standing Roku 3 Control By Harmony Hub Issue Bizarrely Resolved 08Nov21

One of my Harmony universal remotes (Hub) stopped controlling the Roku effectively. The problem was with the Roku 3. It would not accept any IR commands and it would only accept IP commands with often significant (5-8 second) delays. This has been going on for at least 8 months and I have tried every reset, every delete and re-add, every reboot, etc. possible. I now know how to implement whether a Roku is controlled via IP (often preferred) or IR (sometimes needed if an unexpected delay occurs on WiFi). However, changing madly between those modes did nothing. The only remote that worked was the original WiFi controller that came with the Roku - unacceptable. The final repair was discovered largely by accident and is completely bizarre. In a last ditch effort before buying a new Roku, I removed the 8GB microSD card and rebooted the Roku 3 - the Roku began to be properly remotely controllable! Of course I re-inserted the card and again it again failed to be controllable from non-Roku remotes. I even reformatted the card and still no joy. Unfortunately the card was there for a reason - it obviated the need to reload apps on occasion. I also re-attempted IP control but I think that's a WiFi issue in our hood really so I'm using IR to control the Roku from the Harmony Hub (through an IR repeater into my gear cabinet). So bizarre but so glad to finally have the universal remote fully working again.

Update 13Nov21 - I purchased a new 8GB card for ~$6 and inserted it and formatted it right in the Roku. The card works AND more importantly, the IR remote control aspect still works. Good news but still bizarre.

Friends Outing To New Downtown Till 06Nov21

We had a great outing to the new Till restaurant location in downtown COS with our dear friends Scott & Peggy and Jim & Mary. Good fun, good wine, good talks. S&P hosted desert at the estate with very tasty chocolate cake and stellar wines.

Rise Up 05Nov21

Back on the Front Range, and with glorious weather holding, I was able to take the maiden ride on the Orbea Rise at Ute. What a blast, quite a few PRs as one might hope. I am still getting used to controlling the beast however and did clip a tree... but did not put it down. I donned my full knee and elbow protection kit today just in case. I was never passed, which was weird. The sand steps of Ute have gotten bigger in late season but the DHFs didn't slip out. Climbing is a bit learned with the "rider synergy" tuned motor. Even in boost mode you have to spin it to win it - so prior actions using out of the saddle power is not right - staying seated and spinning in lower gears got me the uphill aid I was seeking. I cleared stuff clean today on which I have struggled recently. More great weather is in the offing so I will get more fun.

Update 06Nov21 - Wow the weather is great. I hit Falcon today and rode without many fails. I did walk up some steps in the back but didn't hit anything today. Even though I'm heavy and haven't biked enough this year, the Rise makes me feel like a 60 year old again. ;) I don't know when I started using Strava exactly but I met my Falcon PR from '16 with a gross time of just @ 2 hrs over the 13.2mi and 1465ft of gain. Moving time was less with avg speed of ~7.9mph, as I did rest (not aerobically fit at all right now) - the motor can't put wind back in the lungs. I even got some PRs on DH segments - the Rise is awesome. Most of the advantage for me is on bigger ups and technical power moves. The pic is from a stop to let hikers pass at the creek - just before the Switchback & Bitch Hill in back I think, where I did rest for 5 min. I added a tool kit and appropriate tube under the seat so I probably now am at 40# on the nose... 9# heavier than my Yeti SB95 but with juice! The 360wH internal battery was still dolling out back at the car but I did use eco-mode or off on the flats, mid-mode on small rises and boost-mode was reserved for the bigger, longer climbs. Not bad. I now need to connect my iPhone and see how to tailor the motor torque curves... meaning I'd like boost power sooner in the spin cycle.
Update 11Nov21 - Rode Falcon again today with the boys (Andy, Daryle & Jim). I held my own readily on the Rise. 1st off it was a blast and 2nd, later, I learned I've been riding in Profile 1, which is not really for Colorado trails ~ its targeted for less strenuous terrain. I gotta try Profile 2 which delivers more juice. I can even adjust what P1 and P2 deliver in each mode. I connected my iPhone to the bike (via bluetooth) and ran an app from Shimano which showed me such data ~ and the fact that I had only really used 25% of my 360whr battery anyway. I gotta try P2 and check full climbing power (60nM) and assess battery drain rate. I also did a firmware update on the drive system; WTF, never had I ever expected to connect a phone to a bike and to adjust power profiles and perform software updates - sheesh.

Opening Days (For Brown & Me) @ Keystone 02Nov21-03Nov21

While DD & Y hit the slopes before us this year, we did go pretty early. Storms rolled through with blankets on the peaks (and '21 snowpack well above average), a couple of inches of fresh, and a good environment for Keystone's excellent snowmaking. We had a blast ripping the right side, left side, center of the family fun run, Schoolmarm. It wasn't taxing on the legs but we did score some vert; this even though we had to download on the gondala because the lower part of the mountain is not yet open. Colder than expected but plenty fun. I met Wyatt Johnson (a classmate of Matt's and a former goalie for me) there who is now a liftie supervisor... he looked well.

We were excited to see the lone Keystone brewery, Steep, open up a taproom & kitchen in a prime spot in River Run where Spoon used to be. Duh... we stopped in and Steve enjoyed the brown while I had a nice hazy DIPA. They still brew at the other location but this looks like a big bet for them ~ $8 pints pricing may recoup that pretty fast though.
To keep up with DeBalski, Brown and most of the industry, I did buy some "new" super-coverage edge-to-edge goggles. I found some decently reviewed Native (CO company) googles which normally were $200 but available for $60, as they are existing the goggle market, so I got them. Fit is decent medium face right for me and I scored a bunch of lenses with them too, to cover our variety of light conditions. They look massive on my tiny melon but whatever. Proof will be in the field of course as anti-fog and good viz are key but yeah, I entered the 21st century.
Steve has installed some Arlo cams like others in Summit Co and after we left for homes he caught this fat (ready to hibernate) black bear amble through our cul-de-sac. Very cool - I've not seen a bear in Summit f2f before.
