We left Dunedin, from the best room we'd been in during our NZ swing, the Dunedin Distinction, northbound for the Moeraki Boulders up the coast before heading inland through Twizel and Lake Tekapo on the east side of the Southern Alps, and ultimately back east to Christchurch. This would be our longest travel day with 7 hours of driving.
The Moeraki Boulders are strange spherical balls of naturally concreted material "spit out" of the sandy cliffs and onto the beach. It was a travel day so of course the weather was overcast and fog made the colors true but the visibility low. It was fine as we were only there briefly to see the smallish site, grab the shots and keep on moving.Rolling out of the boulders area, Dangerous Dave, the left-sided driver, again took the wheel for a long drive, to Twizel, on a yucky day. We'd hoped to see Mt Cook from this direction over the hydro lakes. 75% of NZ's South Island electricity is supplied by several lakes at the eastern base of the Southern Alps. The overcast day only provided a few glimpses of the top of the range however. Too bad but we moved through Twizel to Lake Tekapo for more hopeful sights but still fairly cloudy. We moved on to Lake Tekapo and while the rain stopped for me to hunt for pigs, it was overcast still.
