Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway With Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Concert @ Ford Amp COS ~ Opening The Season In The Rain And Dave's Sick 30Apr25

I fell ill and forwent my ticket to the Ford Amp COS to see a great show from great seats with Kala. She got a friend to go though and MY drove so no harm, except that it was cold & rainy outside. Kala said the Ford Amp COS was very good, especially from her seats in orchestra center. Yohos and "our team" dined at the tasty new Polaris Hotel prior to the show. Kala also indicated that the sound and features of the new amphitheater were excellent. I'm bummed I missed Molly Tuttle and going out with Kala & Yohos, but we have tix next in Vail to see her at the OG Ford Amp.

GR8 To Be On The PT Again ~ Wind & 600cfs Flows Didn't Deter Me 29Apr25

I went to Pueblo to fish the Nature Center section of the Ark Tailwater. Dubious with rising waters and 55° highs but I "needed" to get back ~ seeing as I blew off April, and the month is waning. I was pleased I went as I caught a number of fish without much angler competition; I saw one guy with his golden and he blew it off quickly in the hook hole ahead of me; I thought I'd need to go around him and skip that one. With heavy flows I tied on a 3 bead rig with oil can Perdigon, green Perdigon, and RS2. "Mayflies" worked today with Ps taking most and the RS2 landing some. One smaller fish took an Awesome Midge as I thought to see some midge activity~nah. The bigger fish seemed to be in the slower water runs above their large holes; I even was able to sight cast on occasion despite the high flows. The redds are now abandoned but the many ladies on the line today indicates they are super hungry after their time during the spawn.  I think so, but I was not here. The PT rocks as did the RF Ghost Cloud 5 wt: it shot the wind and landed all but my weak-ass set into a nearby tree ~ twice; grr... tying anew.

Nice Day On The Ark In BHSC ~ Beat The Boats & Beat Them Home 27Apr25

As bizarre as it is, today is the first time I've fished this year in April! Yeah, with the West TX outing and camper prep I just didn't go in this the best fishing month of the year around here... I'll try to make up for it. So today I headed out the Ark into Big Horn Sheep Canyon and fished for several hours. I did fine at Pinnacle Rock. It has recovered but the fish are smaller in general yet than "the old days." I dropped in about 9am and fished till ~noon. I caught 15 or so fish with 70% of them rainbows, like the last time I was here last year. Weird in my mind as the Ark freestone is a more notable brown trout fishery. Unfortunately my Hero cam was in backwards and didn't catch the two larger fish: one, my first today, was a 17" brown and the 2nd also early was a 17" rainbow. I missed filming the entire south bank pass. Oh well, after I took the selfie (at the end of the pass) I realized it had been reversed and I fixed it for the second pass... I did south bank first and then reloaded below the state park area and crossed for another go on the north bank. The south was better, or earlier, or less crowded, or shaded, or whatever. After crossing to the north side others in kayaks, and rafts, and some fishermen showed up. Best bug was the black ice perdigon but the RS2 took some too. I saw egg laying caddis but the caddis larvae I tried attracted nothing. Here are a few fish from the south bank pass as well as a nice "fail" pic, and my selfie. I tossed the 5wt 8.5'  RF Ghost Bomber and it cut the wind nicely and easily landed everything I hooked.

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers Concert @ Bluebird ~ With MLC, Yoho, and Seanie 24Apr25

The show @ Bluebird was great last night. Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have been a favorite band of mine (and Matt's) for a long time. I have every album, including pre-Peacemakers Refreshments stuff, and knew 80% of the songs delivered. The lineup has not changed for decades and the band was tight; Roger's songwriting is epic and his voice still shines. They rocked the heck out of a knowledgable and supportive fan base, many of whom sang along and motioned at appropriate moments from the mosh pit. The Peacemakers vibe is completely southwestern US and Colorado is included among the cherished spots describe in the lyrics. Matt invited is friend Seanie to the show and Yoho (who was presented a Peacemakers dive last year on the NestMT) joined for this keen outing.

Before the show we'd orchestrated dinner (Jim & I) at the old school Bastien's Steakhouse nearby and a meetup at the excellent Cerebral Brewing around the corner. We enjoyed some killer hazies at Cerebral, my 2nd most favored brewery in Colorado, including a great collaboration with Tripping Animals, a very fine Florida brewery. We then joined the queue about 6:40pm before doors opened at 7pm.
We grabbed a great position at the 2nd rail above the pit and I stood my ground the entire show. Jim was right there with me and Matt & Seanie were in & out of the show nearby all night. The sound was good in Bluebird but I did use titanium earplugs on a off (thanks Jim). Ike Reilly opened and was solid with good lyrics, a decent voice, and presence. Beyond songwriting, his set was at a consistent pace and within a narrowish range... making it repetitive for me by the end. Illinois boy.
Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers... ripped their opening with the fun "Down Together," a Refreshments tune. That was followed by a great 90 minute, 17 song set with five more songs from the original Refreshments days (early 2000s). There was great stuff from The Peacemakers offers too, but they never sang Americano. The encore was a fine version of the keen Switchblade song, Matt came outside to call me back in for it. Jim Dalton is an excellent lead guitarist and has been constant from The Refreshments... he sang lead on a Railbenders cover. The Mexican trumpet sound was also for cool for several songs. Now local Johnny Hickman, frontman for Cracker, joined for his song, Mr Wrong, with the band. He was good too.

The evening was a great outing with Yoho, TK and his friend. And the show was stellar ~ I'd go again. They declared they were aligning for a show in Puerto Paenasco/Rocky Point in Mexico soon... hmmm, I have a friend who has a house on the beach there.

Bluebird Music Festival ~ Awesome Sets @ Mackey Auditorium 19Apr25-20Apr25

Kala & I went to the Bluebird Music Festival, as we sometimes do, @ Mackey Auditorium on CU campus in Boulder, CO. The festival was all around consistently excellent with good musicians with good voices singing good songs they'd written ~ largely Americana. Net proceeds go to a good cause as well ~ getting instruments and instruction to kids of 1st responders and the like. We did our duty of early arrival for the sessions in order to be able to score front row center seats that I prefer in this nice hall. Bluebird has a smidge of a strange entry format that requires VIP tix holders, as we were, to enter the hall and, in GA fashion, clamor for seating in the first 12 rows. We were basically 4th in line both days ~ that's a big commitment of standing around for hours outside the venue and I do not prefer it but its in addition to the price.

Cody Sisters & Emelese...
the lineup was heavily represented by artists from Colorado and North Carolina. Openers Cody Sisters with Emeliese are from Colorado. They played excellent alt bluegrass. Emelese's voice is very strong and her songwriting apt, and she's been dubbed "one to watch" nationally for a while, she's performed since she was 13. The Cody Sisters Megan and Maddie with Will Pavolonis on bass are great too and the three ladies did some keen harmonies. We thought, wow if these guys are openers were are in for a great show, and we were.
Daniel Rodriguez... is also a Denver, CO guy, and former member of The Elephant Revival. He sang and played beautifully a set of folk tunes. They were pretty simple but the band was tight with his bass guy often delivering great accompanying vocals. The drummer kept a solid muted beat and added a good 3rd part harmony on occasion. Worth it.
HISS Golden Messenger... is an accomplished Durham, NC folk artist with sharp songwriting and a good voice, even now as an elder. Not completely in my wheelhouse but NC stuff is often compelling, as were his songs and schtick.
Bruce Hornsby... Virginia born and still, Hornsby is a well-known and prolific (23rd album just dropped) and versatile artist. From current alt bluegrass with band The Noisemakers to 8 years with the Grateful Dead to Grammys won with BH & The Range he's very accomplished. His set was solo at a Steinway grand where he displayed mad skills throughout a range of styles. His voice is "OK" but his songwriting and catalog is long. We thought he was great and killer close to the day's performances.
A great day at the Bluegird Music Fest was culminated with nitecaps with our great friend Leslie Wilke, who was also hosting us while we're in Boulder. Thanks. We arose Easter Sunday with a booking for a fine breakfast at the Boulderado with Leslie. After some Boulder Benedicts consumed we headed to the new Moxy hotel in Boulder to check it out. It was cool and larger than the one at which we stayed in Chattanooga.
Neffy... After coffee at the Moxy we parted from Les to pay homage to the live music queue gods again. The afternoon sets on Sunday are about telling stories about your songs. First up was Neffy, the 2021 winner of NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. Her winning song was good; her voice was soulful and nice; her writing was good, but not completely in my standard music.
HISS Golden Messenger... He was up again for this section and again he performed well. The issue here was that he played the exact same set he had the day prior, and he even used the same intro stories on the songs... somewhat of a gaffe IMO.
Tallest Man On Earth... This Swedish super-entertainer was fun and an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. He wasn't even the tallest guy on stage but whatever; he'd been one of the artists at the original Bluebird Fest 8 years ago. He had good and funny stories to accompany his songs, which were fun and sung well. It was a very strong and fun set.
Watchhouse... Ok, now we're talking ~ for me this is the duo that solidified my purchase of '25 tickets. Well, along with Mipso, who unfortunately scratched. Formerly Mandolin Orange, they are an awesome couple from North Caroline with strong bluegrass years, keen sad songwriting, often from Andrew, and great musicianship and singing. There set was excellent with plenty of unexpected stuff. After their introduction by the festival's founder who admitted their songs were playing in the room when his child was born, Andrew admitted he didn't fully understand the relationship between "musicians and their music listeners." As mentioned, Andrew writes some sad stuff. Andrew's mandolin is excellent and we were happy to see he even brought his Octave Mandola to play. Emily is a great musician too, wielding a fiddle or guitar most often, and she has a beautiful voice IMO. It was a great set from which I actually recorded a "never played live @ shows and never recorded (till now - heh heh)" original bluegrass tune of Andrew's from 12 years ago.
Anyway... you know me and live music so yeah... seated enjoyment with Kala at my side and awesome artists playing and singing for us ~ it was gr8. Next up this week is Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers.
