CutBows On The Run 11Jun21

I headed to Summit Co again for events and duties. There's a wildfire near the tunnel & Silverthorne so I came the back way - and stopped at 11 Mile for some fishing on the way. Super busy and super windy today - I arrived at ~10:30am and fished till ~1pm with no appreciable bug sign. I caught a number of 17"er cutbows like this on Barr's emerger however... it was not epic.

Happy 41st To Us 10Jun21

Kala and I hiked the AFA in what is one of tghe best wildflower outcroppings there we've ever seen... especially there were purple and pink penstemon everywhere.  It was gorgeous and I captured as many varieties as I could. Later study on Latin perhaps.

The next night we were finally able to celebrate our 41st and we chose to hit Ephemera in the new Trolley Building area. It was excellent and delicious. Salmon tostadas and panzanella salad were especially notable, but don't get the latter if you don't like bitter. Congrats to us.

A Triple The Hard Way With Andy & Jim 08Jun21

Andy Holley bought the gold Mirage reel AND took me out to Rainbow Falls today. We had a blast in the heat, but the fishing was very cool. We all caught plenty of fish but I was "lucky" enough to bag an unusual triple today... brown, cutbow, and GOLDEN. I'd never caught a golden before so yeah for the new species but it was even better that it yielded a triple. I was wielding the Rodfather Brookie 3 wt and landing a number of nice 20+ inchers; there were times when it wasn't enough though - like with a couple of leaping 22"ers that I just couldn't quite control enough. It was a blast on a many fish day for each of us. My best rig with all bugs producing was the #18 black ice, #20 Destiny's Child, #20 Barr's emerger. This was especially deadly during the 11am BWO hatch. I ignorantly forgot the triple threat selfie.

Sails Up On Mon Ami 05Jun21

Well Mon Ami, our sailboat, is in the slip and I raised the sails, set the lines and checked the standing lines, boom & mast today - so the season is underway. I think I need a new battery though - the old one seems to leak. There was only modest activity on the lake but the shore was awash with people, including a new gold guy. There's still plenty of snow to go but the streams are starting to rage from snowmelt. I even tuned up the Summit Co bicycles and made additional advancements on the Nest Theater. To celebrate the start of summer at the Nest, Kala & I enjoyed the 1st mojitos of the year on the deck on a nice day... more mint!

Green Mtn Canyon Of Blue River 04Jun21

We came to Summit to raise the sails on Mon Ami and check on things and chill in the mountains. I took the chance and dropped into the Green Mtn Canyon section of the Blue River for some fishing today. The river is still very low flowing for this time of year - but the GM Rez is not filling much as the inbound Blue River is also low flowing. It's loading a little from smaller streams draining the Gore, but that's not much. The low flows means fishing is technical and one must concentrate on the sections near deep runs ~ the fish are not spread out around the river. There was a modest BWO hatch at 11 am during which I caught some nicer 18" & 19" cutbows on BHFBPT and Black Ice. Else I caught a bunch of browns with one a bit nicer 17". Unfortunately I lost the biggest 'bow in a freak thing - he was big and jumped high immediately on hookup; it was an errant leap though as he landed right on a slightly exposed rock and as he wriggled off, the upper flies caught on the rock and he broke off - sheesh.

Mid-Day In 11 Mile Canyon 02Jun21

Well I'm here so I went to 11 Mile today. It was pretty crowded throughout the canyon with 48 cars on the road and campgrounds bustling. Flows, while low, are holding at 55 cfs. Fishing was decent but the spawn is over and cutthroat, rainbow and cutbows have left the redds. This also means that the biggest fish in the river are less accessible. There was modest midge and BWO hatch sign on and off today. I caught a bunch of 16"ers and two nicer 18"ers but nothing larger. I had a real case of flying fish during attempted "shows" today. I was there during the less effective time - 11am-3pm after a late start, and fished only a few key spots given popularity. I did get to trial my new custom fighting butt for the Rodfather SB2020. Effective midges were #22-#24 Top Secrets & Krystal Flash Awesome Midges; good mayflies included #20 Destiny's Child, #18 Black Ice, #20 grey merc head RS2s. I was a very nice day - it's always awesome to be in 11 Mile canyon fishing but on the way out I was "governed" by a very cautious driver for most of the trip.

Screaming Females 01Jun21

Again I'm very late to the party. Here's some Screaming Females, an almost criminally under-rated three piece rock band from New Jersey with a fine lady guitarist on leads and just two beat makers: "King" Mike King on Rickenbacker base (which he punches brilliantly into his tubes) and their drummer Jarrett Dougherty. Their stuff is mainly alt punk with Marissa Paternoster doing lots of the writing. Too, Spin calls her one of the top guitarists of all time. They've been around since 2007 so there's a lot of work and I just cherry picked some pieces annually and moments (mostly live in mostly studios) throughout. They've released 7 albums, 5 with Don Giovanni records and the first two self-published (then re-released). This is a very good band and hopefully they are making good bank despite the very modest viewership on YT. Marissa is seriously bad ass making great heavy rock but so unassuming when interviewing. If you wanna see the progression, start from the bottom up as they are pretty mellow on NPR - but from earlier work and later work, that vibe is an outlier and probably just a result of the unplugged and bare nature of Tiny Desk. Otherwise go back in time from the top and watch the current shred-fests first.
