I expected to use a miniDSP 2x4HD to apply some equalization to the Blodgett theater. I am impressed with my miniDSP Dirac Live box in the Nest theater and wanted to do some similar magic on the Blodgett theater. Room and speaker correction is so much cheaper in the digital domain and the 2x4HD is a 2 input (1 digital & 1 analog), 4 output 96KHz/24bit digital signal processor which allows nearly an infinite number of parametric EQ filters, FIR filters, low/high pass filters and the like to be applied to the input signals before sending them for amplification. It's a very cool $225 device with supporting software easy enough. I show the before (red fat) and after PEQ (orange fine) in "stereo" along with my target house curve in the SPL sweep from REW. My observation immediately was "insufficient improvement" with possibly even detrimental effect.
Unfortunately (really fortunately) my ancient Integra Research RDC-7.1 AV controller was actually doing a great job of equalizing for the environment and the speakers even before the miniDSP PEQ attempt was made. In part that might be because the Paradigm Research Studio speakers I used, and the AV controller I used, both were built to THX specifications and certified. Shown are my final SPL sweeps in "all channels stereo" with miniDSP correction removed - and in just stereo via the mains, along with my target house curve. The curves are similar for mid-bass and high end as the same drivers are used there. Mains are augmented by sub at the low end. Sounds great and I need to find an alternate use for the 2x4HD.
