Big Fish Day On The Blue 06Oct22

I can't wield the 3wt Endless Wisdom on the Blue... there's just too gr8 a chance of a big fish. So, I took the Rodfather True Five and it was a good thing I did. I was fortunate to land a really nice 22" 5# lady cutbow; I was even in range of a guy who watched the ~6min fight (I was careful and even feathered the reel some on low drag as she ran), hooted and then snapped the pic. I gave him the deadly bug, a #22 lavender glass head, purple body, gunmetal blue wire, peacock thorax & Medora wing emerger midge. I think he said - "I can't see that thing, wait, do you have more ~ you just landed a pig on that." Flows are a nice ~200cfs so crossing and wading was easy. Plus the colors and weather are spectacular with the Gore dusted up - Colorado is so cool.

The lot was slammed with 13 cars (including mine) as I arrived late ~10:40am so I was dubious but enthused to be on the Blue in the fall. The flows are lower, the temps yield bugs, and the fish are stronger. I caught a number of 8"-12" browns but was seeking the larger cutbows on this tailwater, which fishes like a freestone; I caught them too. The slab-lady above was my last of the day at ~2:45pm.  All day long there were mayflies hatching and tons of caddis returning to the water in the PM ~ this is a great spot. I used a rainbow warrior or stonefly weight, a MHFBPT nymph or a green wire caddis nymph and trailing silver surfer mayfly (till I ran out) as the water was just a skosh milky green. The SS and caddis took the most fish but I ran out of SS and swapped for the purple midge for the last push. My fly boxes are basically empty ~ tyin' to do.
Cutbows were jumping crazy, escaping madly (I had a massive 26"er on and he wisely scraped the line raw on a rock to break off - he left me with nothing), and doing their thing.
