Epic Swing Part 1 - Chasing Tail' Summary 08May19

I called it and returned to Summit Co after seeing Steamboat and the Yampa were going to be under two nights of sub-freezing and two days of likely precipitation with highs about 44°. I learned a lot on the Epic Swing Part 1 and will relay below the more salient summary observations.
  • It is hard for even me to fish everyday for weeks, especially while sleeping in a camper in more remote areas, doing my own cooking always, without support of breweries and pizza joints - and doing everything solo. It is actually pretty tiring and I need to rest a smidge at this point.
  • Grey Reef of the North Platte was awesome and was easily the best fishery I visited (despite the inclement weather); Wind River and Big Horn River were good but were big water and not easily waded IMO; the Miracle Mile of N Platte might be good but not when I went and it is not easily waded or accessed at all; the Green River @ Fontenelle is a straight pass in my book - not worth the trouble; I'll hit the Yampa again another time.
  • The WYO tailwaters cut through mostly topography that creates what I'll call "prairie" rivers, versus "mountain" rivers cutting through CO's mountainous terrain. There's much less structure anywhere and rare is suitable bank habitat. My point is that the holding areas are quite different and reading these rivers takes time and work - sometimes I didn't really get it well - especially when the river looked just wide and flat to me.
  • The bugs are the same and beatis and midges were on display on each river. Perhaps the bugs were a smidge bigger than on CO tails - and I'd say on the better tails, the fish are bigger in WYO. Sight fishing was less useful for me given the water colors or the scale of the rivers - when I see fish to target it really helps my productivity.
  • On multi-day camping outings, get your gear ready but still expect failures and time required for repairs and maintenance. Popups are not the best choice for very windy spots like WYO.
