I went to Angler's Covey for Landon Mayer's presentation on "the close game" today. As usual he was very entertaining and instructive. He kicked it off tying his most well-known flies: the tube midge, the micro-leech, Mayer's mysis, and an even smaller leech. I've tied variants of the leeches and the tube midges - nice. He really uses a lot of ostrich and flash in every fly (man after my own heart) and he loves the micro squirrel strips, believing it really presents liveliness in the water, as does the ostrich. Mayer's patterns are in the Umpqua line and he touted a number of their hooks too. He moved on to a presentation about fishing for giant trout and how to attract them. It was very good not unlike the "tips" presentation, it's an indexed DVD with techniques recorded over 3 years, but wasn't always about being close. He spent 2 hours with us and no one left!
