The Mysterines @ Lost Lake 07May22

The Mysterines were very good in concert; perhaps it was a little business-like in execution, but still very good. Dave, Jim and I headed to Denver yesterday to see them on their first tour of the US, just nine stops in major cities but in small venues. The Mysterines were fine but the sound was just OK. Lost Lake is a tiny venue... we were against the back wall but only 10 feet away from the stage! There were not many people at the show but the few I talked to, who were not on my team, did know of the Mysterines and came to see them, as had we. There were <100 folks in the house.

Lia Metalfe is the singer/songwriter lead vocalist; she is joined by long time bandmatae bassist George Favager as well as drummer Paul Crilly and guitarist Callum Thompson. It's a good lineup now for a couple of years and make no mistake, it's Lia's band. The video from the night is Life Is A Bitch and I focused the video just on Lia... while we toted my small rig into the club, Lost Lake's sound setup didn't warrant special audio recording.

I was fortunate to score the setlist as a memento for the night ~ a handwritten page from Lia with the 14 songs they played this night. We were bummed they didn't come back for an encore, and that the merch table had only size M t-shirts left. Nonetheless certainly worth the effort to come out.

Before The Mysterines arrived we listened to Los Toms first, a 3 piece outfit who didn't suck ~ and then Cleaner, who did suck. I was very worried about the sound mix when Cleaner played and one could not really hear much but a beat and a blare. It was a high energy blare but not in a good way. Fortunately the sound was much better for the Mysterines and we often saw Lia making adjustments with her own sound engineer on the panel.

We arrived in Denver in time for a good SE Asian dinner at Ace Eat Serve and a beer at the excellent Cerebral Brewery across the street from Lost Lake ~ truly one of my fav breweries in Colorado (and how strange that the guest taps were two hazy IPAs from ORB ~ respect). When we hit Lost Lk to enter, the "Will Call" was simply a list with names - we mentioned ours and we were "in." There was a funky camera feed of the stage area and strangely no marquee highlighting The Mysterines were playing that night. It was all pretty understated and surprising to me, but I've been a fan for some time and need to realize they just recently dropped their first album. Next time through though, we need a better sound stage for them.

We stayed the night at Jim's downtown condo, which was awesome, and we enjoyed a nice hot tub and Jim's breakfast this morning. Awesome outing. Awesome band.
