The day after a pretty big weekend I jumped Vail Pass to fish the Gore. Flows are low so fishing is thin & technical but for the scarce deep holes. I started at Stephen's Park (the dog park) and quickly fooled a nice 16" Colorado cutty. Good start here when you are looking for different species. I caught some other cuts too and some smaller 'bows on the tan chubby or the BH olive caddis larva. At the hole above the footbridge I caught a strong thick 18" German brown on caddis larva. I was glad to be wielding the Rodfather Diamond Blaze 4wt for landing. It is likely the nicest brown I've caught on the Gore. The vid cam has been hanging some recently but resets once battery dies... I recovered in time to take an alternative camera pic. It's a small run from below the park to above and I was stoked with a triple completed. I hopped out to head to West Vail end of road section between the townhomes.
I jumped in the water at the pipe crossing the stream at the west end and fished upstream to the first bridge. As mentioned prior - wading is certainly a dance in this section. I caught a number of smaller 'bows and browns but about 4/5 through the pass I hooked a nice rainbow on a #20 black ice as some younger guys approached from below (and asked to pass me). Again probably my best rainbow, a strong 18"er, on the Gore. This was a stellar triple day for me. I stopped off at ORB/Bird for an In The Steep DDH and a Bird Bowl.
