With snowfall blunting fishing and riding weather I am taking the day to repair the Foundry Broadaxe's top tube. I cracked it wicked during last year's trip on the White Rim. I'm using a technique called carbon fiber lay-up. I bought a complete kit online from Gorilla for $50. Using it entails:
- Sanding/etching, then cleaning with acetone, the area on the bike to be repaired. On my top tube that's a 6" section.
- Cutting and dry fitting a piece of 2x2 carbon fiber fabric for around the cracked tube and extending 1.5" on either side.
- Preparing epoxy and painting on a thin base layer covering the area to receive the carbon fiber. I let this cure till tacky (~3hrs).
- Placing the CF fabric around the top tube and pressing it into the tacky base coat of epoxy.
- Dabbing on another layer of epoxy assuring the CF is entirely penetrated everywhere.
- Wrapping the release film over the entire repair area. I'll leave that on for an entire day while all the epoxy cures.
- Unwrapping the repaired frame! I could polish with rubbing compound but it's cool as is and it's fixed.
