Tying The Colorado Nuclear Egg 18Mar20

With the rainbow & cutthroat (and therefore cutbow) spawn in full swing on CO tailwaters, trout eggs are a good lead fly. If the fish don't take it, they notice and might take your trailers. I was headed to 11 Mile and tied a mess of my favorite egg pattern, a nuclear egg, for the outing. Here's my recipe and then some tying tips.
  • Hook: #14 TMC 2457
  • Thread: White UTC Ultra Thread 140
  • Body: McFly Foam 3/8" - salmon colored
  • Overbody: Glo Bug - White 3/8"
Tie on White 140 (need strong tension) to TMC 1457.
Tie on 3/8" diameter McFly foam with 1/2 in showing

.

Tighten and scootch back & forth to distribute around hook.
Bring thread to front.
Bring foam to above & cut sharply @ 1/2 hook gap.
Looks like a mushroom top initially.
Distribute foam into a sphere.
Choose GloBug 3/8" strand of materiel and cut a 1" piece.
Pull off a small portion manually into a 1" wide "blanket"
Prepare thread with 1" of dub wax and add "blanket."
Fold blanket in half around thread and wrap.
Whip finish x 4 and trim "whites" to hook bend. Done!
